Microorganisms Cut WWTP Cost, Improve performance

A midwestern municipal WWTP is finding that selected microorganisms prepackaged in water soluble containers can provide significant gains in operating efficiency. The 2 MGD facility was meeting expectations but experienced consistent operating problems from grease build up in the activated sludge system, tertiary filter and sludge drying beds. Convenient controlled-quality application of custom-selected microorganisms is showing these benefits:

  1. Reduced grease build up in the plant, resulting in less maintenance.
  2. Improved sludge settling characteristics. Return sludge concentration increased to 14,000 to 15,000 mg/l and maintained at that level. (Historical level was in the 12,000 to 13,000 mg/l range)
  3. Reduced sludge production was up to 34% compared to previous periods of similar operation.
  4. Reduced volatile suspended solids in the digester to 30% from a range of 33% to 36%

BIO-SYSTEMS has been refining the application of microorganisms for various industrial and municipal processes. These tests and field applications have made us optimistic about the water soluble packaging concept for precise dose control by non-technical personnel. Reports are consistent - economical usage and assured results.
