Oily Waste Disposal

Introduction

The land farm at this petrochemical refinery was well operated, with good routine maintenance. Over a period of five years the oil content of the soil had increased from approximately 6 million pounds to 12 million pounds. It was decided to evaluate the use of Bio-Augmentation to increase the rate of oil degradation in the soil. The product selected was Bio-Systems' specially prepared formulation supplied by Bio-Systems Corporation of Beloit, WI. A single application of Bio-Systems' product was completed in the early part of April 1988. Oily Waste Disposal Chart

Summary

The data shows that the total pounds of oil on the land farm has gradually increased from October 1983 through to March 1988. Bio-Systems products were added one month later, April 1988. The graph shows that despite adverse conditions, including a dry and hot summer, the land farm degraded almost ten times the oil it had in previous years using Bio-Systems products.

Review

From 1983 thru March 1988 there was an average amount of oil biodegraded of 0.3 million pounds per year. From March to September of 1988, After Bio-Systems was added, the total oil degraded was 4.6 million pounds. This is almost double the biodegradation rate of the best year previous, and nine times the average biodegradation rate of the last three years.

Conclusion

The use of Bio-Systems products at the land farm has clearly enhanced biodegradation of the oil.
